Radio Message / Tract #31-M
What is the most powerful muscle in the human body? We have arms and legs, hands and feet, a chest and a back. Which of all your body parts is capable of doing more good, or more harm than all the others? And which of your muscles controls the course your soul will take through life and throughout eternity?
Well, actually, the Bible says, "Death and life are in the power of the TONGUE." (Proverbs18:21)
Our tongue does our talking. Our words can easily destroy others, or heal others. One tongue can order the slaughter of millions of innocent people. And one tongue can bring new life and salvation to millions. Jesus said, "Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart brings forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the Day of Judgment. For by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned." (Matthew 12:33-37). The words we have spoken decide our eternal destination.
Even the most muscular men on earth have a hard time training their own tongues. But James 3:2 tells us that if we can just control our tongue, then we can control the rest of our body. James 3:3 goes on to explain, "Behold we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires.
Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. Behold how great a wood a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind: But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless God, even the Father; and with it we curse men, which are made in the image of God. Out of the same mouth proceeds blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so."(James 3:3-10).
What an accurate description of the human tongue! We may go to church every week and give to every good cause, but James 1:26 says, "If any man among you seems to be religious, and bridles not his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is vain." That means, if we can't control our tongue, and watch our words, our Christianity is in vain. It's worthless.
Do you like good food? We also use our tongues for tasting and our mouths for eating. Many people would never put rotten food into their mouth, but they don't mind letting rotten words out of their mouth. They don't realize that what they say will hurt them far more than what they eat. Jesus said. "Not that which goes into the mouth defiles a man; but that which comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man." (Matthew 15:11). In other words, it's not what you eat, it's what you say that will condemn your soul.
Do you know the Sixth Commandment? It's "Thou shalt not kill." Jesus said, "You have heard that it was said by them of old time, 'Thou shalt not kill.'… but I say unto you…. Whosoever shall say to his brother, 'You fool!' shall be in danger of hell fire." (Matthew 5:21,22). You may never have killed anyone with a gun or a knife. But you may have committed murder with your mouth, according to Jesus. If you've ever called someone "Useless", "Stupid", "Fool", (or worse names), you are what the Bible calls a "reviler." 1Corinthians 6:10 says you "shall not inherit the kingdom of God." Jesus said, you are in danger of Hell fire!
Words are so easy to speak, but so impossible to recall once they've been spoken. Even if our words made no impression on the person we spoke to, they made a very big impression on God. Every word we've ever uttered, and not repented of, is still indelibly etched on the pages of God's records, and they'll remain there until the Judgment Day. Jesus said, "But I say unto you that every idle word that men shall speak they shall give account of in the Day of Judgment." (Mat 12:36).
Is there someone you have a habit of complaining about? In Titus 3:2, we are commanded to, "Speak evil of no man." That includes your boss, your co-worker, your family members, your neighbors, your leaders. "Speak evil of no man."
God has permanently revoked all license for people to complain about other people. We should pray each day as David prayed, "Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the doors of my lips." (Psalm 141:3).
The tongue is the most active instrument of sin on the face of the earth. It has been the ruin of more souls than any other part of the body. Listen to this list of the sins of the Tongue. How many have you committed?
- Tongues are used for blasphemy. For breaking the 3rd Commandment; taking the Lord's name in vain. In Lev. 24:10-16 the Old Testament penalty was death.
- Tongues are used for reviling. Jesus said the penalty for insulting others is Hell fire.
- Tongues are used for deceit. Deceit includes flattery, exaggeration, slander, false accusations, and promises you've made, but you haven't kept. These are all lies in God's book. Revelation 21:8 says that all liars shall have their part in the Lake of Fire.
- Tongues are used for complaining. Often in the Old Testament God himself destroyed people who murmured and complained. (Numbers 11:1)
- Tongues are used for profanity; for swearing and filthy talking. Ephesians 4:29 commands us, "Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth."
7. Tongues are used for boasting and bragging about what you've done, or what you're going to do. But Proverbs 27:1,2 says, "Boast not thyself of tomorrow, for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth…. Let another man praise thee and not thine own mouth."
Has your tongue ever been used in any of these ways? You understand now that your own tongue has condemned your soul and shut the gates of Heaven against you. God cannot overlook or forget one single word that you've spoken. But, dear friend, you have one hope, and only one hope.
One Friday morning Jesus carried to the cross, and held in his heart every lie you've ever told, every curse word you've ever uttered, every insult, boast, or murmur that has ever come out of your mouth. He took on himself all the weight of all the words of all the world. And under that weight, he died. He carried those sins down to the depths of Hell and left them there forever. Then he rose again from the dead. He now offers to you complete forgiveness for every word you've ever spoken, and every sin you've ever committed. If you believe it, your life will change, your speech will change, and your eternal destination will change. You'll be on your way to Heaven.
Our mouths had brought eternal condemnation on our souls. Our mouths can also bring salvation to our souls. Think carefully about Romans 10:9,10. "If you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus Christ, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved. For with the heart man believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." And verse 13; "For whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." If you've never called on him before, call on him now. Bow your head and make this your prayer.
"Dear Lord Jesus, I'm guilty. My words alone have been enough to forever keep me out of Heaven. But you paid with your life, for the words I had spoken. I love you for that. I don't want to sin against you or others with my tongue any more. Save me from sin. "Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight oh Lord my strength and my Redeemer." (Psalm 19:14). In Jesus name, Amen."
